Euro Set to Outperform Pound, US Dollar, and Yen on Stronger Fiscal Resilience
Nomura strategists believe that the Euro is poised to outperform other major currencies such as the Pound, US Dollar, and Japanese Yen. This view is based on the Euro area's stronger fiscal resilience compared to the UK. The strategists note that foreign inflows into Euro area bonds have surged in recent months, driven by higher yields and relatively low risk.
The team at Nomura highlights the challenges facing the UK economy, including a higher debt-to-GDP ratio than the euro area aggregate and rising net interest payments in the years ahead. In contrast, the Big 4 European countries - France, Germany, Italy, and Spain - have better positions, with government interest payments expected to remain below those of the UK and US.
Nomura's analysis suggests that the Euro is likely to outperform both the USD and JPY due to its relatively stronger fiscal dynamics. The strategists acknowledge that the risk of a country leaving the euro area or EU has decreased, with populist governments in Europe no longer proposing extreme measures such as exiting the currency union.
