Euro Strengthens Against Yen on Improved German Business Sentiment
The Euro has strengthened against the Japanese Yen due to improved business sentiment in Germany. The IFO Institute Business Climate Index rose to 88.8 in August, beating market expectations of 87.2. This increase suggests that German businesses are feeling more optimistic about the current economic conditions.
The survey's components also showed above-expected results, with the Current Assessment Index rising to 88.5 and the Expectations Index jumping to 89.1. However, despite these positive indicators, investors remain cautious about Japan's public finances and interest rates. The Japanese Yen continues to be weighed down by concerns surrounding a wide interest-rate differential and potential intervention in the foreign exchange market.
BNY Mellon strategists stress that inflation remains a core issue in Europe, even as signs of economic growth become more evident. They argue that while activity is improving, tightening monetary policy too early could be premature, particularly with the Euro near cyclical highs.
