Euro Surges Against Pound as ECB-BoE Policy Divergence Widens
The euro has taken the upper hand against the British pound due to diverging expectations from the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of England (BoE). As of early 2025, the EUR/GBP pair is hovering near multi-month highs at approximately 0.84.
This divergence in policy outlooks has led to a repricing in interest rate futures markets, with traders now pricing in a higher probability of BoE rate cuts in the first half of 2025 compared to the ECB. The yield differential between UK and eurozone government bonds has narrowed, making the pound less attractive to yield-seeking investors.
Recent economic data has reinforced this narrative, with flat UK GDP growth and weakness in the services sector. In contrast, eurozone data has been relatively more resilient, particularly in the manufacturing sector, which has shown signs of stabilization.
