Euro Surges as ECB Tightening Expectations Outpace Japanese Fiscal Worries
The Euro has been gaining ground against the Japanese Yen as investors increasingly expect the European Central Bank to continue tightening monetary policy. According to Deutsche Bank analysts, there's a 90% chance of an interest rate hike at the ECB's September meeting.
Recent macroeconomic data has reinforced these expectations, with Eurozone inflation accelerating to 2.9% YoY in July and core inflation unexpectedly rising to 2.5% YoY. The economy expanded by 0.4% in the second quarter, twice as fast as consensus estimates.
The Japanese Yen remains under pressure despite last week's coordinated currency market intervention by Japanese and US authorities. However, market attention has shifted toward Japan's deteriorating fiscal outlook, with investors concerned about the absence of a clear funding plan for proposed tax cuts and cash transfers.
