Euro Surges on Strong Eurozone Data and ECB Rate Hike Bets
The euro has strengthened to its strongest level in nearly four months, reaching $1.148 as of June 17. This surge is largely due to robust economic data from the Eurozone and speculation that the European Central Bank (ECB) may raise interest rates for a second time this year.
According to recent numbers, the Eurozone economy expanded by 0.4% in the second quarter, exceeding forecasts of 0.2%. This marked its strongest growth since early 2025, with Spain leading the charge at 0.7%, followed closely by Germany, France, and Italy each growing 0.2%.
Firmer inflation readings in Germany and Spain have also bolstered expectations for further ECB tightening. The ECB's decision to raise interest rates would likely offset concerns over rising Middle East tensions and a divided Federal Reserve.
