Euro Surges to 1.17 as Ceasefire Eases Tensions
The US-Iran ceasefire has sent shockwaves through financial markets, causing the euro to surge against the US dollar. The EUR/USD pair reached a high of 1.17, marking its best rally since late January.
The sudden shift in fortunes was triggered by reports of a two-week truce between Washington and Tehran. Despite ongoing attacks by Iran and Israel's continued strikes on Lebanon, investors scrambled to adjust their positions, driven by fear of missing out (FOMO).
The US dollar, which had previously risen alongside oil prices due to the conflict, began to lose ground as tensions eased. The futures market now puts the odds of a Federal Reserve rate cut in 2026 at 44%, up from 12% earlier.
It remains unclear whether Donald Trump has truly resolved the conflict in the Middle East. Iran claims victory, while the US says it has achieved its objectives. As negotiations continue on April 10, markets are trying to determine whose claims are more credible.
