Euro Traders Breathe Easy as Volatility Drops to Multi-Month Lows
The EUR/USD exchange rate has been experiencing low volatility over recent sessions, according to ING's foreign exchange strategy team. The team attributes this decline in volatility to a combination of factors, including a lack of major economic surprises and a quieter geopolitical calendar.
As a result, the euro has been trading within a narrow range against the dollar, with support and resistance levels holding firm at around 1.08. This range-bound trade suggests that short-term traders may favor range-trading approaches, while longer-term investors might wait for clearer signals.
However, ING notes that low volatility environments often signal a market in equilibrium but can also precede a breakout. The team warns that potential catalysts on the horizon, including upcoming US inflation data and ECB policy communications, could easily break the current range.
Investors should keep an eye on key economic releases and central bank speeches for hints of a volatility spike. A surprise in inflation or a shift in central bank rhetoric could easily disrupt the current equilibrium.
