Euro Tumbles Below 1.08 as Dollar Strength Endures
The euro continued its decline against the US dollar on Tuesday, despite softer-than-expected US economic data. The EUR/USD pair slipped below the 1.08 mark, extending its recent decline as traders focused on the resilience of the US economy compared to the eurozone.
The European Central Bank's (ECB) accommodative stance and policymakers' hints at potential rate cuts later this year have made the dollar more attractive to yield-seeking investors. In contrast, the Federal Reserve has maintained a cautious approach, emphasizing that it needs more evidence of inflation sustainably moving toward its 2% target before easing policy.
The divergence in monetary policy expectations has put downward pressure on the euro, which is also affected by political uncertainties in Europe, including fiscal concerns in France and Germany's economic slowdown. European exporters may benefit from cheaper goods abroad, but a weaker euro raises the cost of imports, particularly energy, which could fuel inflation.
