Euro Weakens as ECB Holds Rates Steady Amid Escalating US-Iran Tensions
The European Central Bank (ECB) kept its key interest rates unchanged at its July policy meeting, aligning with market expectations. The main refinancing rate remains at 2.4%, while the marginal lending facility rate and deposit facility rate hold steady at 2.65% and 2.25%, respectively.
The ECB's decision was accompanied by a cautious tone regarding energy prices, which it deemed 'highly volatile.' The central bank also noted that the full impact of the recent energy shock has yet to materialize, implying potential inflationary pressures ahead.
In the midst of this uncertainty, the Euro (EUR) continues to weaken against the US Dollar (USD), despite the ECB's decision not to pre-commit to any particular interest rate path. The Greenback is benefiting from renewed safe-haven demand due to escalating tensions between the United States and Iran.
Energy markets are also under pressure as attacks on Saudi oil tankers threaten traffic through key shipping routes, contributing to a sharp rise in West Texas Intermediate (WTI) US Oil prices. With this backdrop, the Federal Reserve may need to tighten monetary policy to combat inflation concerns, according to market expectations.
