Euro Zone Bond Yields Decline as Oil Prices Fall Amid Middle East Diplomacy Hopes
Oil prices plummeted Monday, sparking a decline in euro zone government bond yields as investors grew more optimistic about diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in the Middle East.
The US President Donald Trump's comments that talks with Iran were expected to begin later on Monday raised hopes of a potential agreement that could help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy shipping route.
This sentiment boost led to a 5 basis point decline in Germany's benchmark 10-year government bond yield to 3.158%, reversing part of Friday's sharp rise that had pushed yields close to their highest levels in 15 years.
The easing concerns over energy-driven inflation also contributed to the decline, with Brent crude dropping about 5% to $83.30 a barrel.
