Euro Zone Bond Yields Near 15-Year Highs Amid Middle East Conflict
The European Central Bank's rate hike expectations are being driven by persistent energy inflation caused by the Middle East conflict. The euro zone bond yields have remained near 15-year highs, with Germany's 10-year Bund yield holding steady at 3.20%. This increase in bond yields has highlighted growing geopolitical and inflation risks across the region.
The widening Italy-Germany spreads have also become a concern, with the yield premium on 10-year Italian government bonds over German Bunds standing at around 77 basis points on Monday. This is significantly wider than the 63 basis points seen in February before the attack on Iran.
Market analysts are now closely watching developments in the conflict alongside incoming economic data for signs of whether the energy shock is broadening into wider price pressures. The direction of oil prices and the duration of the Middle East conflict will likely remain key drivers of bond yields in the weeks ahead.
