Euro Zone Bond Yields Rise Amid Oil Price Volatility
The euro zone bond yields experienced a modest uptick on Thursday as oil prices rebounded slightly from their recent declines. The rise in oil prices, which had fallen to $85.40 per barrel on Wednesday, contributed to the increase in bond yields. The Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world's energy typically flows, remains a point of contention between Iran and the US, with Qatar's prime minister set to visit Tehran in an effort to relaunch diplomacy.
Brent crude traded at $87 a barrel on Thursday morning, up from Wednesday's low but down 0.9% on the day. Erik Liem, rates strategist at Commerzbank, noted that 'Bunds are unable to hold their gains from previous sessions in the face of higher oil prices.'
Traders in money markets were last pricing in roughly 43 basis points (bps) of further monetary tightening from the European Central Bank this year. This is a slight decrease from Wednesday's close but still reflects concerns over inflation and government spending.
