Euro Zone Consumers Cut Inflation Expectations Amid Brief Energy Price Relief
Consumers in the Euro zone have tempered their inflation expectations following a brief respite from high energy prices. According to a European Central Bank poll, respondents saw a median inflation rate of 3% over the next 12 months, down from 3.5% in May.
The view on inflation three years ahead also declined, with consumers expecting an average annual increase of 2.8%, compared to 2.9% previously. However, expectations for five-year inflation remained unchanged at 2.4%.
The drop in inflation expectations is attributed to the recent truce in the Middle East, which led to a decrease in energy prices but proved short-lived. The European Central Bank's Consumer Expectations Survey suggests that consumers have become less optimistic about future price increases.
