Euro Zone Inflation Expectations Edge Closer to ECB Target
The European Central Bank is keeping a close eye on inflation expectations in the euro zone. A recent poll of consumers shows that they now expect prices to rise by 2.8% three years from now, down slightly from 2.9% in the previous reading.
This decrease of 0.1 percentage points may seem small, but it indicates a gradual shift toward the ECB's target inflation rate of 2%. The central bank has been fighting high inflation for the past two years, which peaked after the energy shock and supply chain disruptions across Europe.
The cooling inflation trend in the euro zone is reflected in the latest consumer expectations poll. Headline inflation has been trending lower, and wage growth has stabilized. As a result, the ECB has kept interest rates unchanged in recent meetings, waiting for clearer signs that inflation is firmly under control.
