Euro Zone Inflation Surges Above 3%, Interest Rate Hike Imminent

Inflation in the euro zone has surged back above 3% for the first time since September 2024, driven by rising energy prices. Headline inflation rose to 3.3% in August from 2.9% the month prior, while core inflation, which excludes food and energy costs, dipped to 2.4% from 2.5%, according to Eurostat.

The euro zone's reliance on imported energy makes it vulnerable to price fluctuations, with energy inflation soaring to 14.3% in August from 10.3% the month prior due to ongoing conflicts in Iran and Ukraine.

Market analysts expect the European Central Bank (ECB) to hike interest rates by 0.25 percentage points to 2.5% at its next meeting, citing LSEG data that shows almost all traders believe a rate increase is imminent.
