Euro Zone Inflation Surges to 3.3%, ECB Interest Rate Hike Looms
The European Central Bank is likely to raise interest rates for the second time in response to inflation pressures. Inflation in the euro zone rose to 3.3% in August, driven by energy price increases.
The increase in headline inflation was the highest since September 2024 and marks a return above 3%. Energy prices accelerated to 14.3%, up from 10.3% in July.
However, core inflation, which excludes volatile components like energy, food, and tobacco, dipped slightly to 2.4%.
Traders expect the ECB to increase interest rates by 25 basis points at its September 10 meeting, with a 98.9% probability of this outcome.
