Euro Zone Lending Accelerates Despite Higher Rates
The European Central Bank (ECB) released data showing that bank lending to euro zone companies and households accelerated in July, following the central bank's decision to raise interest rates for the first time in nearly three years.
The annual growth rate of loans to non-financial corporations reached 4.4% in July, up from 4.0% in June. Lending to households grew at a 3.1% annual pace, a slight increase from 3.0% the previous month.
The ECB has been navigating a delicate path between taming inflation and avoiding an economic slowdown. The central bank's first rate increase in nearly three years marked a turning point in its policy stance after an extended period of negative rates and massive asset purchases.
