Europe at Crossroads: Choice Between Decline and Collective Action

Christine Lagarde, President of the ECB, addressed the Deutsche Bundesbank in Berlin, Germany. She referenced Johann Paul Friedrich Richter's description of Berlin as 'more a part of the world than a city.'

Lagarde noted that this city has been at the center of significant events throughout history, including war and division during the Cold War. West Germans made a critical choice in 1949 by anchoring their economy firmly in the West under Chancellor Konrad Adenauer.

This decision had far-reaching effects on European integration, shaping its course for decades to come. Lagarde suggested that Europeans are now faced with another crucial choice: about who they choose to rely on and how they want to shape their future.

The President of the ECB outlined three possible paths forward: acceptance of Europe's decline, a focus on individual national interests, or continued commitment to building a stronger European Union through collective action.
