European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has sounded the alarm over Europe's vulnerability to the US artificial intelligence boom. Speaking in Vienna, she warned that Europe risks footing the bill for this technological advancement without reaping any benefits.

Lagarde noted that AI is becoming increasingly pervasive across various sectors, from border control and tax audits to hospital management and financial transactions. This widespread adoption makes it a 'special case', as access can have far-reaching consequences if withdrawn or changed.

The European leader pointed out that Europe's savers are financing the development of US AI infrastructure while their own infrastructure lags behind. According to Lagarde, European households hold around €440 billion ($508 billion) in shares of US technology companies such as Nvidia and Alphabet.
