Europe Eyes Success of Brazil's Pix Payment System
The success of Brazil's Pix payment system has caught the attention of European countries looking to develop their own digital currencies. Brazil's Central Bank created Pix as an instant payment system, allowing individuals to send and receive money 24/7 at no cost. Users register a 'Pix key' which can be a phone number or email address, making transactions easy and fast.
According to Iolanda Paz, a colleague from Brazil, Pix has become the most used payment method in the world since its launch five years ago. Its popularity is due to its simplicity and convenience, with users able to split payments into installments and receive their money back if they fall victim to fraud.
However, the US government has taken notice of Pix's success and has imposed tariffs on Brazil due to concerns that a government-owned system could hinder foreign companies' ability to compete in the market. But despite these claims, data shows that credit card use in Brazil actually increased between 2020 and 2025.
The European Central Bank is considering developing its own digital euro, with a pilot program underway. The success of Pix has raised hopes that Europe can create its own successful digital currency, but the challenges are significant and the outcome far from certain.
