Europe Faces 'Unusual Crisis' as AI Dominance Eludes Continent

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has sounded an alarm about Europe's prospects in the AI technology race. The United States and China are dominating the field, leaving Europe at risk of being left behind.

Lagarde pointed out that the US is investing heavily in AI, with 59 flagship models under development last year, while China had 35. In contrast, France and the UK had only one each. Furthermore, the US accounts for 75% of the world's AI computing capacity through data centers, whereas Europe holds a mere 5%.

Lagarde emphasized that Europe faces a 'difficult choice': either it hesitates to adopt AI and miss out on growth or it adopts AI quickly and becomes heavily dependent. She warned that if trends continue, Europe's data center capacity will fall short of meeting its own demand by more than sixfold within 10 years.
