Europe Risks Financing US AI Boom Without Reaping Benefits
European Central Bank (ECB) chief Christine Lagarde has expressed concerns that Europe may be left paying for the benefits of American artificial intelligence (AI) without sharing in the profits. Speaking at a recent event, Lagarde noted that European savers are financing US tech firms like Nvidia and Alphabet through their investments.
Lagarde highlighted that European households hold approximately €440 billion ($508 billion) worth of shares in these companies, which are developing transformative technologies such as AI. She pointed out that the US is leading the development of AI, with 59 notable models created last year, compared to just one each from France and the UK.
Lagarde's comments come amidst warnings from top US AI firms about the potential risks associated with rapid AI development. CEOs like Dario Amodei of Anthropic and Sam Altman of OpenAI have called for a slowdown in AI development due to concerns that AI agents could go rogue or outsmart human-imposed guardrails.
Lagarde emphasized that AI is a special case, as it has the potential to impact every sector across Europe's economy. She warned that a withdrawal of access or change in terms would have far-reaching consequences for European industries.
