Europe Risks Missing Out on AI Revolution, Warns ECB Chief Lagarde
Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), recently warned that Europe cannot afford to miss out on the opportunity presented by artificial intelligence. The current European growth model, driven by globalization and cheap energy, is eroding, she said.
The ECB leader emphasized that the previous digital revolution left Europe behind as other parts of the world captured the commercial benefits. Lagarde stressed that it's crucial not to repeat this experience with AI, saying 'We cannot afford to repeat this experience with AI, the second digital revolution.'
She highlighted Europe's strengths, including a large network of trade agreements and highly qualified workforce. However, she noted that turning internal resilience into durable long-term growth requires better leveraging the scale of the European internal market.
The two main obstacles to investment spreading and growing in Europe are the fragmentation of the single market and the fragmentation of capital markets, Lagarde stated. These barriers reinforce each other, reducing profitability and hindering expansion.
