Europe Scorched: Record Temperatures Unleash Supply Chain Chaos
Europe is facing a growing list of challenges due to record temperatures, including disruptions to supply chains and increasing food prices. The Rhine river's exceptionally low water levels are causing bottlenecks, with around 285 million metric tons of freight transported on the river each year. This has led to suspended or reduced cargo services, pushing up transport costs.
Andrzej Szczepaniak, Nomura senior European economist, is monitoring water levels at Kaub, one of the shallowest points on the Rhine, daily.
The heatwaves and droughts are also impacting agriculture, raising concerns about food supplies and prices. Paul Jackson, Invesco global market strategist, said 'we are definitely going to notice food price inflation' due to the additional impact of the El Nino weather pattern.
