Europe Slams Trump Tariffs as Global Debt Hits Record High
The US is facing increasing criticism from European leaders over its economic policies, particularly President Trump's tariffs on Canada. The German Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor, Lars Klingbeil, warned that these tariffs will 'ultimately harm everyone involved.'
Klingbeil made his comments during the G20 Summit in Asheville, where European leaders expressed frustration with America's unilateral actions. They cited the ongoing war in Iran and Trump's handling of global trade as major concerns.
According to the Tax Foundation, tariffs have raised the retail price of imported consumer products by about 7% compared to pre-tariff trends in 2025. The Trump administration is attempting to impose an additional 7.5% tariff on Chinese imports despite a Supreme Court ruling striking down its previous sweeping global tariffs.
The global economy has suffered due to the war in Iran, with global debt reaching an all-time high of $353 trillion and US debt hitting $40 trillion in August. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent attempted to reassure investors that 'I don't think we're in any kind of dire situation' on bond markets.
