Europe Suffers Record Economic Damage from Heatwaves and Droughts

The European economy has taken a significant hit this summer due to record heatwaves and droughts. Temperatures reached unprecedented highs in June and July, causing widespread disruptions to electricity generation, shipping, and public health systems.

Economists estimate that the total impact on the region's economy could be measured in hundreds of billions of euros, with costs rising faster than temperatures. The climate in Europe is changing faster than any other continent, straining public finances and causing large fluctuations in inflation.

The heatwaves have reduced people's productivity, claimed tens of thousands of lives, and put an additional strain on budgets for emergency response efforts. The suspension of Rhine traffic alone will reduce Germany's GDP by 0.3 percentage points this year, while Hungary's MBH Bank estimates that every week the country's largest nuclear power plant is out of operation reduces GDP by 0.1 percentage point.
