Europe Suffers Supply Chain Disruptions Amid Record Temperatures

Record temperatures across Europe have created fresh pressure on food prices, supply chains, and heavily indebted economies, adding to the woes of financial markets already affected by an Iran war-driven energy shock.

The Rhine river, a major waterway, is suffering from exceptionally low water levels, which has suspended some cargo services and reduced loads for others. Around 285 million metric tons of freight are transported on the Rhine each year, with approximately 80% of goods moved on Germany's inland waterways.

Heavily indebted economies such as Italy and Greece could be severely affected by rising food prices due to heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires across Europe. Invesco global market strategist Paul Jackson said the additional impact of the El Nino weather pattern will intensify food inflation pressures globally.
