Europe teeters on recession as energy costs surge

Europe's economy is at a critical juncture as fresh energy inflation, decelerating industrial output, and constrained government aid heighten the likelihood of a technical downturn. According to BCA Research, this assessment describes the situation as delicately poised.

The eurozone confronted the newest energy disruption from a more vulnerable starting point than during 2022, with analysts having already projected 2026 expansion at roughly 1.2%. Factory activity has subsequently weakened, with the composite purchasing managers index now aligning with quarterly drops in gross domestic product.

Price pressures could also linger longer than anticipated, with Dutch TTF natural gas rates surging to more than double their level at the start of the year. Fertilizer scarcities and a robust El Nino pose additional risks for food-cost increases.
