Europe Votes on Euro Notes Design: A Chance to Cement Shared Identity

The European Central Bank has decided to consult the public on shortlisted designs for a new series of euro banknotes, marking an opportunity for Europe to strengthen its common identity. The bank acknowledges that the currency is in need of a 'tangible reflection' of shared values and motifs that can unite Europeans.

Previous euro notes have been criticized for lacking bold statements or representations of European culture, instead featuring abstract designs like bridges and windows. However, the new proposals show a marked improvement, with five design sets shortlisted for each theme.

The two themes are 'European culture' and 'rivers and birds.' The former features famous Europeans like Marie Curie and Miguel de Cervantes on the obverse, while the latter shows birds with water features behind them. Critics argue that official buildings, such as those of the European Parliament or Court of Justice, lack symbolic significance in representing European unity.
