European central banks are relocating their gold reserves from North America to other locations, including London. The Netherlands moved approximately 86 tons of gold from the United States and Canada to the Bank of England, citing 'increasing geopolitical tensions' as the reason.

The Central Bank of the Netherlands explained that the move is not a sign of an imminent crisis, but rather a precautionary measure to ensure quick access to their reserves in case of a crisis. Governor Olaf Sleijpen stated, 'We expect to never have to use them, but we need to strengthen our resilience and level of preparedness.'

The Bank of England is one of the largest gold custodians in the world, holding around 400,000 bars with a total value of over £200 billion. The move to London allows for quicker access to the market and increased liquidity.

Other European countries, such as France and Germany, have also repatriated their gold reserves from North America in recent years. Central banks are increasing their gold holdings, buying an average of 1,000 tons per year over the last four years, up from 500 tons annually in the previous decade.

Gold is considered a safe-haven asset and has risen sharply in price, reaching historic highs above $5,000 per ounce. The World Gold Council notes that central banks are diversifying their locations to manage risks and ensure quick access to their reserves.
