European Companies Slow to Adopt Cryptocurrencies Amid Dominance of Cash
A recent survey by the European Central Bank (ECB) of 8,205 companies has revealed that cryptocurrency adoption remains low in Europe. Despite the growing interest in digital currencies, only 0.2% of surveyed companies accept cryptos or stablecoins as a means of payment for online purchases, and 1% do so in physical stores.
The dominance of traditional payment methods is evident, with cash being accepted by 92% of physical stores and bank cards by 88%. Mobile payments have seen significant growth, rising from 36% in 2024 to 68% in 2026.
The ECB has emphasized the importance of preserving access to cash, even as digital commerce expands. The institution's goal is to ensure that growing payment automation does not inadvertently harm or weaken cash as a viable payment option.
