European Companies Struggle to Raise Prices Amid Cautious Consumers
European companies are struggling to raise prices due to consumers becoming increasingly cautious about price increases amid rising fuel costs, according to research by the European Central Bank (ECB).
The ECB's survey of 76 large non-financial companies revealed that only 40% of respondents reported price increases in their sectors, primarily for intermediate goods and transportation. However, direct-to-consumer companies are finding it challenging to pass on higher costs to customers as households carefully control their spending.
Some electronics prices have even fallen due to cheaper imports from Asia, with about 40% of companies experiencing reduced profit margins.
The ECB notes that grocery stores are noticing a decrease in consumer spending, causing them to opt for chain brands over well-known brands. This trend is attributed to higher fuel costs leaving consumers with less money for other purchases.
