European Heat Wave Brings Food Price Inflation and Supply Chain Disruptions
Europe's record temperatures are causing widespread disruptions to food supplies and supply chains, adding pressure on economies already reeling from the Iran war. The Rhine river, a key transportation route for Germany's inland waterways, is suffering from exceptionally low water levels, with around 285 million metric tons of freight transported annually. This has led to cargo services being suspended or operating at reduced loads, pushing up transport costs.
The heat wave and droughts are also affecting agriculture, raising concerns about food prices and supplies. Invesco global market strategist Paul Jackson said, 'We are definitely going to notice food price inflation.'
This development is a double whammy for central banks, as rising energy prices could exacerbate the situation. The European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of England (BoE) must balance the risks of extreme heat against potential drag on economic growth.
