European Heatwave Costs Billions, Redrawing Tourism Map

Europe's record-breaking heatwave has caused hundreds of billions of euros in economic damage, affecting various sectors including power generation, logistics, and agriculture. The extreme weather conditions have also led to a significant decrease in labor productivity and claimed tens of thousands of lives. Germany alone has recorded over 10,000 heat-related deaths.

The heatwave's impact on the tourism industry is particularly pronounced, with southern Europe expected to suffer the greatest damage. Carsten Brzeski, an economist at ING, notes that 'the nature of tourism will change' as peak summer demand declines and tourists shift northward. This shift could have long-term consequences for regional economies.

The economic losses are not limited to direct costs; inflation volatility is also a concern. Maximilian Kotz, a researcher at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, estimates that the extreme heat of 2022 pushed eurozone inflation up by 0.34 percentage points due to higher food prices. This could further complicate policy management for the European Central Bank.
