European Retail Landscape Shifts Toward Price-Conscious Spending
The European retail landscape is characterized by a paradox in 2025 and 2026. On one hand, purchasing power continues to grow, and inflation has moved closer to the European Central Bank's target. Labor markets remain resilient, but consumer sentiment stays cautious. Retail turnover increased, yet it lags behind income growth as households adapt to economic uncertainty.
Years of economic turmoil have fundamentally changed consumer behavior, leading to price-consciousness and a focus on value. Europeans balance affordability with quality, convenience, functionality, and trusted brands. A study by NIQ Geomarketing examines the key trends shaping European retail in 2025 and 2026.
The study highlights that despite nominal increases in average per capita purchasing power to 22,425 euros, representing a 3.3 percent growth compared to 2024, consumer behavior has shifted toward services and experiences over retail purchases. Retail turnover grew by 2.1 percent in 2025, with the strongest gains recorded in Northern and Eastern Europe.
Philipp Willroth, Study Lead at NIQ Geomarketing, notes that 'the key finding is not that Europeans are spending less, but that they are spending differently.' Rising purchasing power no longer translates automatically into higher retail spending. The retail share of total private consumption in the EU declined for the fourth consecutive year in 2025, falling to 31.9 percent.
