European Salaries Misleading When Converted Directly to Indian Rupees
An Indian man living in Finland shared his experience of how converting European salaries to Indian rupees can be misleading. He explained that simply using the prevailing exchange rate does not accurately reflect how much a person can actually buy in another country.
The man highlighted the differences in purchasing power and cost of living between India and Europe, citing everyday expenses such as groceries. He said that with 100 Euros in Europe, you can only manage your expenses for at most one to two days, but with the same amount in India, you can buy at least two weeks' worth of groceries.
He used the concept of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) to explain that a salary that appears substantial after currency conversion can feel very different once local expenses are taken into account. He warned people not to fall into a trap by directly converting European salaries to Indian rupees without considering the actual living costs.
