European Shares Slide to One-Month Low Amid Middle East Tensions

European shares slid to a one-month low on Wednesday, weighed down by a global bond rout and escalating tensions in the Middle East. Brent crude prices surged above $95 a barrel, stoking inflation worries as the US and Iran exchanged fresh strikes.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index dropped 0.3% to 645.42 points, with retailers leading most sectors lower by 1.5%. The Eurozone's vulnerability to energy imports made it particularly susceptible to market fluctuations.

Despite this, strong earnings during the latest reporting season provided some relief to investors, who saw companies coping better than expected. Mark Haefele, chief investment officer at UBS Global Wealth Management, maintained a positive outlook on Eurozone equities.

Elevated government debt in regional economies, such as France and Italy, has become a concern amid the prospect of higher interest rates adding to fiscal burdens. The yield on German 10-year bonds hit its highest since April 2011, with investors expecting a 35% chance that the European Central Bank's deposit rate could reach 3% by March 2027.

Banking stocks limited losses on the STOXX index, with Deutsche Bank AG rising 2.2% after Goldman Sachs upgraded its shares to 'buy' from 'neutral'. Lottomatica, however, tumbled 9% following a takeover deal, while Nokia Oyj rebounded nearly 1.7% after being readded to the Euro STOXX 50 index.
