European Stocks Plummet on Inflation Fears, Oil Prices
European stocks dipped to nearly a three-week low on August 19, weighed down by rising oil prices and inflation concerns. The Stoxx 600 index closed 0.11% lower at 651.16 points.
The aerospace and defense sector led losses with a 1.6% drop, while European banks slipped 1.5%. According to Fiona Cincotta, senior market analyst at City Index, 'There are several headwinds that banks are facing... the latest developments surrounding the yields, concerns over the economic outlook for the European economy and what that might mean for households and businesses as far as increased chances of a rate hike from the ECB.'
Basic resources shares gained 3.3% after tracking precious metal prices, while healthcare shares rose 1.4%. Despite this, inflationary pressures remain a concern, particularly in energy-dependent Europe.
