European Stocks Rebound Amid Inflation Fears
European stocks ended Friday on a high note, but still suffered their sharpest weekly decline in two months. The pan-European STOXX 600 rose 0.5% to 639.1 points, despite logging its steepest weekly fall since early July.
The market's woes were compounded by rising oil prices and concerns over inflation. Oil prices surged above $100 a barrel after the European Central Bank raised interest rates and warned that inflation could persist due to ongoing Middle East tensions.
Despite this, some analysts remain optimistic about the market's prospects. Mark Haefele, chief investment officer at UBS Global Wealth Management, stated that higher interest rates may weigh on valuations, but do not signal a derailment of European equities' improving earnings backdrop.
In related news, inflation accelerated in the US in August, with consumer price data showing a sharp rise. This has led markets to anticipate a quarter-point increase in interest rates next week, with some investors bracing for further monetary tightening due to higher energy prices.
