European Stocks Stagnate Ahead of ECB Rate Decision and Lagarde Remarks
European equities traded in a narrow range on Thursday as market participants waited for an anticipated interest rate increase from the European Central Bank and remarks from President Christine Lagarde regarding oil prices and inflation. The pan-European STOXX 600 was little changed at 639.79 points, with most regional markets moving within tight bands.
The ECB is widely expected to raise rates by 25 basis points to 2.5% when it releases its policy decision at 1215 GMT, and to indicate a willingness to tighten further should the inflation outlook fail to improve. Financial markets are pricing in one additional rate increase later this year, followed by one or two more moves next year.
Susannah Streeter, chief investment strategist at Wealth Club in London, noted that the outlook would be closely monitored to determine whether a wait-and-see approach would be adopted or another increase could occur. Lagarde is scheduled to hold a press conference at 1245 GMT.
