Europeans Get to Vote on Next Generation of Euro Banknotes
The European Central Bank (ECB) is asking Europeans to weigh in on the design of the next generation of Euro banknotes. The public consultation, which will remain available until September 21, 2026, features 10 shortlisted designs based on two themes: European Culture and Rivers and Birds.
Over 1,200 applications were submitted by graphic designers across the European Union, with 25 designers eventually invited to develop proposals. An independent 21-member jury selected the final 10 designs for public consideration.
The ECB is not only looking for a new aesthetic; they also want to incorporate improved security features and make the notes more accessible for people with visual impairments. Additionally, they aim to reduce the environmental footprint of future banknotes through greater durability and sustainable materials.
