Europeans Invited to Shape New Euro Banknote Designs

The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled its plans to redesign the euro banknotes and is seeking input from citizens across Europe. The ECB's governing council will select a proposal in late 2026, but it may take some time before new banknotes are circulated.

According to ECB President Christine Lagarde, euro banknotes are more than just a means of payment - they reflect the values and diversity of Europe. To ensure that the new designs accurately represent these ideals, the ECB is conducting an online survey, which will remain open until September 21.

The redesign proposals focus on two themes: European Culture and Rivers and Birds. The former features famous Europeans such as Ludwig van Beethoven, Marie Curie, and Leonardo da Vinci, while the latter highlights the resilience and diversity of Europe's natural ecosystems, including species like the kingfisher and white stork.

Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel encouraged citizens to participate in the survey, stating that 'the more people who vote, the better the euro banknotes will reflect the diversity and values of Europe in future.'
