Europe's AI Dependence Puts It at Risk of Being Cut Off
ECB President Christine Lagarde warned that Europe faces an unprecedented risk of being cut off from artificial intelligence (AI) technology, which could have far-reaching consequences for its economy and way of life. According to Lagarde, European firms currently rely heavily on imported AI technology from the United States, leaving them vulnerable in case access is restricted.
In a speech delivered in Vienna, Lagarde highlighted that AI will soon be used extensively across various sectors, including border control, tax auditing, transportation, healthcare, and finance. She noted that a withdrawal of access to AI or a change in its terms could have a devastating impact on Europe's economy, potentially jeopardizing every sector.
Lagarde emphasized the need for Europe to become a producer of AI technology to preserve its autonomy and achieve efficiency gains necessary to maintain its standard of living. She suggested that building more European computing capacity and developing models that run on local infrastructure could help mitigate this risk.
