Europe's AI Dependence Sparks Warning from ECB Chief Lagarde

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has sounded the alarm over Europe's dependence on US-made artificial intelligence technology. Speaking in Vienna, she emphasized that this reliance poses a significant risk if access to these services is restricted or their terms of use change.

Lagarde pointed out that AI will soon play a crucial role in various sectors, including inspecting goods at borders, coordinating trains, monitoring patients, and processing bank payments. If Europe's access to these technologies were interrupted, it would have far-reaching consequences across multiple industries and grant trading partners undue leverage in negotiations.

To mitigate this risk, Lagarde advocates for the rapid development of European computing infrastructure and AI models capable of handling most tasks locally. This move could potentially boost productivity by up to 4% over the next decade.
