Europe's Dual Push for Digital Money: ECB Unveils Private Digital Euro
The European Central Bank (ECB) is moving forward with its digital euro project, emphasizing the importance of user privacy. The bank's design aims to provide the highest level of privacy currently supported by technology, with offline payments only visible to the payer and recipient.
At the same time, Revolut has launched EURR, a euro-backed stablecoin on Ethereum, in three European markets: Denmark, Poland, and Portugal. This move is part of Europe's effort to create alternatives to dollar-backed stablecoins that dominate the on-chain payment market.
The ECB's executive board member, Piero Cipollone, stated that the digital euro would prevent the ECB from directly connecting transactions to specific individuals. Online transactions would also be anonymous, while participating banks would retain access to information necessary for Anti-Money Laundering compliance.
