Europe's Extreme Heatwave Sets Off Fresh Headaches for Financial Markets
Record temperatures across Europe are piling pressure on food prices, supply chains, and heavily indebted economies. Major waterways, including the Rhine river, are experiencing exceptionally low water levels, which could further weigh on industrial production and growth.
The disruption is adding to inflationary pressures, with heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires hitting agriculture and raising concerns about food supplies and prices.
According to Invesco global market strategist Paul Jackson, 'we are definitely going to notice food price inflation' due to the additional impact of the El Nino weather pattern. Jackson also warned that if energy prices rise again, it could create a 'double whammy' for central banks.
