Europe's Heatwave Hits Economy with Double Whammy of Inflation and Supply Chain Stress

Record temperatures across Europe have put additional pressure on food prices and supply chains, exacerbating economic concerns. The heatwaves are disrupting major waterways, including the Rhine river, which transports around 285 million metric tons of freight annually.

Nomura senior European economist Andrzej Szczepaniak is monitoring water levels at Kaub, one of the shallowest points on the Rhine, daily. Low water levels have led to cargo service suspensions and increased transport costs.

Food price inflation concerns are rising due to heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires affecting agriculture. Invesco global market strategist Paul Jackson predicts 'we are definitely going to notice food price inflation.'
