Europe's Households Make Surgical Cuts to Prioritize Quality of Life
Millions of families across Europe are struggling to make ends meet due to rising costs of living. According to Eurostat, essential goods like food, housing, energy, and transport consume around 46% of every euro spent by EU households.
Despite eurozone inflation sitting at a three-year high of 3.3%, people are not cutting back on everything. Instead, they are making careful trade-offs, trimming fat from other areas to redirect funds towards culture, dining, and well-being.
The big spenders are housing and utilities, which remain the biggest drain on wallets due to past energy spikes and ongoing geopolitical tensions pushing fuel costs upward.
Consumers have been directing a larger share of their budgets toward recreation, sport, and culture, rising by 1.2 percentage points between January 2025 and January 2026.
