Europe's Record Temperatures Fuel Supply Chain Disruptions and Inflation Fears
Europe is grappling with record temperatures, exacerbating food price inflation and supply chain disruptions. The Rhine River, which carries about 80% of Germany's inland waterway goods, has seen exceptionally low water levels, affecting cargo services and pushing up transport costs.
Nomura Senior European Economist Andrzej Szczepaniak monitors the situation daily, warning that persistently low water levels could further weigh on industrial production and growth. The Rhine River transports around 285 million metric tonnes of freight each year.
The heatwaves and droughts across Europe are also impacting agriculture, raising concerns about food supplies and prices. Invesco global market strategist Paul Jackson expects 'food price inflation' due to the additional impact of the El Nino weather pattern.
