Europe's True Cost: Why Currency Conversions Don't Tell the Full Story
An Indian man living in Finland has sparked a conversation online about the reality of cost-of-living expenses in Europe. The individual, who posts under the handle @sharedtales_journal on Instagram, highlighted how directly converting a European salary into Indian rupees can give a misleading picture of one's earnings.
The man explained that a salary that appears substantial after currency conversion may feel very different once local expenses are taken into account. He used everyday expenses to illustrate the concept of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP).
According to the individual, 1 Euro is almost equal to ₹110. Therefore, if someone earns €1,500, it might seem like they earn ₹1.5 lakh. However, in Europe, €100 can cover expenses for only one or two days, whereas in India, with a similar amount (approximately ₹10,000 to ₹11,000), you could buy at least two weeks' worth of groceries.
The man emphasized that the actual reality of living expenses in Europe is vastly different from what it might seem after currency conversion. He urged people to become aware of PPP and consider local expenses when evaluating salaries abroad.
